RE:  Funding for Replacement Teaching During Childbearing Leaves and Periods of Active Service-Modified Duties for Ladder Rank Faculty and Stop the Clock Policy
 
Funding for Ladder Rank Faculty Replacement Teaching
University of California Family Friendly Policy provides academic appointees (holding full-time appointments for at least one full academic year) who are birth mothers with a maximum two quarters of combined Childbearing Leave and Active Service-Modified Duties (ASMD).  The maximum is one quarter for all other eligible academic appointees. 

In order to minimize the financial impact this might place on the instructional program of the department, central funding for replacement teaching will be provided to the affected department at the rate of $5,500 per course.  The Request for Funding for Ladder Rank Faculty Teaching Release (UCI-AP-93) form to request replacement teaching funds is initiated by the faculty member at the time the period of leave or active service-modified duties is requested.  The Department Chair provides information on the individual’s teaching load and the form is forwarded through the Dean to the Office of Academic Personnel for review and approval.  A copy of the form is attached.

Campus policy (APP 7-12) has been updated to incorporate these funding provisions. 

Stop the Clock Policy
Campus policy addressing Stopping the Tenure Clock for the purpose of Childrearing responsibility requires that once a Stop the Clock request has been approved, the individual must exercise the Stop the Clock by notifying his/her Department Chair, in writing, no later than the second half of the individual’s actual fifth year.  Exercising the childrearing Stop the Clock is not automatic.  In order to emphasize to Assistant Professors that they must exercise this option (it is not automatic), the Stop the Clock Request/Certification Form (UCI-AP-92) has been modified.
