ACADEMIC DEANS
RE: Review of Associate Deans
This is a reminder that Deans are responsible for conducting performance reviews of Associate Deans no later than their fifth year of service and at five-year intervals thereafter (Delegation of Authority IDA312).
The purpose of the review of an Associate Dean is to evaluate his or her performance as an administrator and academic leader within the area of the Associate Dean’s responsibility. The review should address the following:
- Has the Associate Dean contributed effectively to undergraduate and/or graduate programs in the School?
- Has the Associate Dean dealt fairly and wisely with faculty, staff, and students?
- Has the Associate Dean applied the policies of the University of California and UCI effectively and fairly?
At the outset of the review, the candidate should provide the Dean with the following documentation:
- A statement of his or her personal accomplishments as Associate Dean within the period of review.
- An analysis of the progress and quality of those academic programs for which the Associate Dean has responsibility.
- Future plans for development of those programs.
- An updated curriculum vitae.
The Dean should solicit confidential assessments of the Associate Dean’s accomplishments from Departments Chairs and other faculty and staff, as appropriate.
Following this review the Dean has authority to reappoint the Associate Dean for a period up to five years. All actions must be reported to me for information at the time the action is taken.
