ACADEMIC DEANS AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS

RE:  Merits for Academic Senate Faculty

Earlier this year I consulted with you about streamlining the academic personnel review process by trying to restrict the department evaluation to one page for deans delegated merit actions for Academic Senate Faculty.  This concise analysis provides a focused evaluation of the candidate’s record during the period under review.  The September 25, 2003 implementation guidelines for delegated merits already encourage concise evaluations, but the guidelines have now been modified to stress the one page limit.  These guidelines are located on the Academic Personnel web site at: http://www.ap.uci.edu/Policy/authority/Delegate_anc.html.  The appropriate Action Summary form (UCI-AP-24DD) and Checklist (UCI-AP-33DD) have also been updated on the Academic Personnel web site.

It is further recommended that department evaluations for all normal merit increases be no longer than one page.  Effective evaluations focus on the candidate’s significant contributions or deficiencies which drive the department’s recommendation.  The evaluation need not itemize all of the elements of the file.  It is more important to evaluate the candidate’s performance in light of the criteria set forth in the Academic Personnel Manual 220-10.

If you have any questions regarding merits, please call me at 824-7371.
