ACADEMIC DEANS AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS
RE: Revised Guidelines for Postponement of Tenure Review
The authority to postpone tenure reviews from the normal sixth year to the seventh year has rested with the deans since 1991. Since the 2000-01 review cycle, the Council on Academic Personnel (CAP) has been conducting post-audits of tenure postponement decisions. Last fall CAP requested that the postponement file (which consisted of the assistant professor’s request, the department’s recommendation, and the dean’s approval letter) be accompanied by the candidate’s full merit or reappointment file, which is normally required for continuation beyond the sixth year.
Effective with the 2006-07 review cycle, postponement of tenure review files (accompanied by a full merit or reappointment file) must be forwarded to the Academic Personnel Office for further review by the Council on Academic Personnel. I will review the postponement of tenure review files and inform the deans of the decision to grant or deny postponement of the tenure review. It is critical that these files be forwarded to the Academic Personnel Office by December 1, so that decisions can be rendered in a timely manner. Academic Personnel Procedure 3-50 (APP 3-50) has been revised and a checklist, UCI-AP-38, has been provided to assist departments in documenting postponement of tenure files appropriately.
If you have any questions regarding postponement of tenure reviews, please call me at 824-7371.
